Im a decent bass angler but don't know much about catching catfish. The only catfish I have ever caught were 2 incidental catches while fishing a dropshot for bass. I have an empty 120g tank that I want to put a bullhead in. What are some techniques for catching a bullhead and does anyone know a lake around the LA area that has a good bullhead population? Thanks for any help.

ive caught them by putting dog biscuits in a minnow trap.....try the swampiest part of where ever you set it, thats where i have the most luck. best of luck to you.

Isn't keeping natives in California illegal unless you have a permit for it? Someone in California got busted and paid the fines.

From what I have read, catching them on line is not a good idea, as they tend to swallow the hook, and you belly hook them. Plus I would think you would want to start small, as throwing a fairly large bullhead in a tank could shock them.

I would try to do it with a minnow trap or seine.

Mealwroms!!! friend cought a 10pund channel cat on one mealworm. am sure it would work for a bullhead to. i tried it the same night right when i got it to shore it looked like a bullhead but i put my line down to grab him (bad mistake!!) and the hook slipped out of him.

In California its illegal to take live (key word) fish from the wild. You have to buy them. I think getting them from a private lake/pond is acceptable too. Unfortunately many of the people on this site don't give a crap about these laws.

*Sigh* Only if MinnowMagnet were here to educate the ones who went in this route as he once went in that route before he was caught. Seriously, this forum need to step in and act up about the laws to keeping natives. I broke one of the regulations and I got caught but they let me go with a warning, never do that again! If it can happened to me or a poster on here, then it can happen to anyone.

Hot Dogs. catfish love hot dogs. and if they swallow the hook they have a special acid in them that will eventually digest the hook with no pain or effect on the fish. if he swallows the hook just cut the line at his mouth and he will live still.

Is this for all fish even non-game fish?
