So here's my dilemma. I started with pfs, then found that my giraffe nose catfish loves to dig and sift through it. Too much sand was getting sucked into my filters so I vacuumed all the sand out and went bare bottom for a while. I have ceramic tiles on the bottom now but I really miss the look of sand and the ease of maintenance. Can anyone recommend a coarse, sandy substrate for me that won't be as fine as pfs?

Just get some basic gravel. And maintenance is much easier with tile/bare bottom vs sand. Although I do agree sand has a nice look to it.

Find a local place that sells sandblasting sands. They will have several different grades "size of grains" of sand.
My local supplier has it in baby food jars to show the different grades of sand. I paid $11.99 per 100 lb bag for natural looking large grain sand. They called it washed and graded for size. It had minimal dust.

I use the Quickcrete pfs and find it really large and heavy....but I also have top skimming overflows and my canisters have sediment traps in the bottom. My Jag and Argentea constantly move it from front to back and it drops really fast....

Not sure what brand you've tried but I've switched all my tanks to it because of it's larger size.
