Need help chosing a GOOD D-SLR

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello,

i'm using the Pentax K20D ... when i bought this camera i also had to choose between those Canons, Nikons - due to working very much there was no question about the money ... and i took the Pentax!
I had the opportunity to test Nikons and Canons owned by friends - and also the Pentax K10D. I liked the Pentax and one friend, a "Canonican" said, if he could buy a new camera he would buy a Pentax ...
This weekend i was staying in Austria and Suisse and took pics when it was heavily raining - the Pentax is a camera for all occassions.

Some pics ...

Thanks for the input Uwe, I am definately leaning towards the K20D now.

It all depends on the lens. I would probably just take one of those bodies and upgrade to a slightly better lens. But they will all take great shots... Canon parts might be a little more reasonable.

all camera's are capable of taking good, crisp, clean shots you just have to know how to use them. research how many types of interchangeable len's pentax has to offer, compared to that of nikon or canon. there are many things to take into consideration before buying a DSLR.

I know Nikon and Pentax are like the original names in photography, but from the videos I have seen on the K20D I am very impressed with it...

To be honest I dont care how many lenses are available for the camera, I am really only interested in 2-3 which would be a decent wide angle (stock lense) just to start and then a macro & telescope which are available for the K20D. But I also know they are available for the D60 & the D80...

Hello,

about the lenses ...

The pics you are seeing here were made with the Pentax 17-55mm f/2,8 II kit lens - except for the pic of the lizard and the snake, which were made with my Sigma 70-300mm f 4 -5.6 APO ... a relative cheap lens with "pseudo" macro abilities (1:2).

All the great camera manufacturers do have big sortiments of lenses and the lens manufacturers (like Tamron, Sigma etc,) do have lenses for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus and so on ...
But there is a little difference: The Canon cameras have their shake reduction system OUTSIDE of the camera - you have to buy those special lenses with internal shake reduction ... it's a question of the costs.
The Pentax do have an internal shake reduction system.

All in all it's like the question: Shall i play a Gibson or a Fender or a Ibanez?

I sold all my Gibsons and Fenders and bought those Ibanez (a Steve Vai Original Jem and a Baritone 7string). Why?
They were cheaper (now the Vai isn't ...) and ... better!
I also had Apple computers ... due to working in 3D i bought PCs ... the same story as above.
The crux of great names like Canon, Nikon, Apple, Gibson, Fender and others: They are thinking: Peple will buy our products because they WERE state-of-the-art. But ... are they here and now?

Greetings

Uwe

it's not a matter of how many do you wish to buy, but what models are offered that would best suit your photography.

example- telephoto lenses-

180mm
200mm
400mm
600mm
500mm

etc, nikon offers all of these models and more and all have different focal length and features, some have vibration reduction (VR), some are faster than others F2.8 aperture V.S F4 aperture. some have differnt glass elements that effect the optics of the lens. and the list goes on. you have to decide whats best for yuorself based on all factors, not just focal length.

same deal goes for micro/macro lenses. 50mm, 60mm, 105mm, 150mm, etc. and wider angles to. 16-85mm VR zoom wide angle or 14-24mm 2.8?

i don't know that pentax offers as many options as nikon or canon.- the top 2.

as Uwe said the pentax has the image stabilization built into the body which makes the lenses cheaper...

and as you say they can all take a sharp, crisp picture why not go with the more affordable selection? the VR lenses for Nikon are a little pricey...
