I bought 2 sp redfins and 1 was larger size than another. the smaller one was getting chased by the bigger one and i thought it was no biggie. but when i came home from work i see the smaller one with tattered fins and the chasing continued.. i have separated the 2 snakeheads and waiting for my new and bigger tank to come in around 5 days
is there a way to stop this "bullying" if i put them together again?

keep them separate the bullying will only get worse until the tank mate is killed either in an attack or in an attempt to jump out of the tank. This species , as with many species of snakehead is best kept solo.

To form a pair your best chances are to start with several fry (6+), and wait for a pair to form. When a pair forms in a group it will be obvious because the pair will quickly turn aggressive toward all other snake heads in the tank.

HI,

nothing more to add to DC's comment !
Correct in all cases !

Thanks 8

But at the place I bought it from, they kept 6 in a pretty small tank and all of it huddled under a leaf. And thought that it was okay to get a pair

Only when I brought it back the bigger one started attacking the smaller one. Could another reason be that the tank is too small?

Never consider the way you see fihs kept in an LFS ( bar some exceptions ) as an example.

They are just quick stops for stressed out fihs on their way to someone's tank.

Once thet get settled in, that is when they show their nature.

I agree with everyone else, snakehead are tricky to keep with anything, some people have kept them with other fish but after countless hours research the overall verdict is they are a ticking bomb with anything apart from a solo species set up, sorry to put a downer on you

Depends on space and species....giants are best kept conspecifically solo...

My new tank would be 80 inch by 14 by 14.. Is that big enough for them to not attack each other? Or adding 2 more will stop it?
Right now my tank is very small...
