Since you have that much sand - personally I wouldn't get raid of - since it a prefectly good sand for reef tanks or FOWLR tanks that don't have any elasmobranches(sharks or rays) in them.

Instead just get another tank for the shark. Or remove the sand from that tank, and replace it with a finer grade of sand.

Yes the best suggestion would be a new tank. Your better off having these animals away from other fish anyways. The sand that I got from a local beach is not only very fine but it also is dense and when it gets stired up it settles instantly. I was luckey enough to end up with the best of both worlds with my sand. It is a possibility that your shark was doing some digging and caused the irritation so like you said keep a close eye on it but in the meantime also keep an eye out for another tank.

Best of luck.

Do you guys not have the problem of the fine sand getting sucked into your power heads when the shark stirs it up? By the way, the rash is gone but will probably come back when he gets in the mood to dig like crazy again. I will be getting another tank for him, most likely a very very long one because he seems to like getting up speed and cruising. He is in a 125 g. 6 feet long. I am sure he would appreciate an 8 footer.

well my sand is so heavy that it only effects my powerheads when I stir it up durring cleaning.

I'm glad to hear you shark is doing better though.
