Need help getting Xanto to yellow up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks Linus,

But i do believe i mentioned i use Fluval peat granules...
Each box cost me about 14 dollars...not sure how long it lasts but its been about a month on 1box and 4 waterchanges...still strong with the tea color.

does the peat serve the same function as far as exchanging metal ions etc? i thought it just lowered pH and made a nice color.

Yes it was a custom made tank. The height on it is only 12 inches though.

this makes me REALLY want to make something like this for my plecos...:headbang2 thank you! *writes down in notebook*

I don't know where the name 'Xanto' came from, but that should suffice for a common name instead of L056.

i found this in the albino/leucistic thread:

Xanthophores: produce yellow pigment

Another hawaii guy popping up huh? LOL!!! Howsit my brudduh...

UPDATE!!!!
...welllllll...not a lot has happened to be honest. i actually just had a bout with anchorworm. NO idea how it was introduced into the tank. Maybe early infestation from exporting country...maybe one of my gold barbs (dont really think so though)..but whatever. the problem should have passed now.

as i was pulling out anchorworms, i noticed that the underside of the fish is very light colored, almost full yellow actually.

maybe it was the anchorworm that made him so stressed over the past month or so...but i guess i'll just have to see now that hopefully the worm problem is over

i've also been debating whether or not to have his tank be downgraded to a 55g wit the barbs inside. This tank would have more access to natural sunlight and i think that's the missing piece to this equation. Otherwise, i just don't see why it would yellow up. and fish tend to be colored for their environments (more or less)...so i'll lighten up his environment a little more.

any thoughts on having him go into a 55g? he would pretty much be the only fish in there. im thinking of having my L114 be his other tankmate. hes absolutely puny compared to the xanto. (about 6in long, 3in wide head)...so i dont forsee that being a problem.

i would probably move his Fluval 405 over with him so i can maintain my method of peat granule usage....

i see it as optimization of tank space usage.
Basically, ive got 6 royal plecos ranging from 3-6" and that L114, along with 2 fat comets (lol) and a handful of guppies...in a 55g. Also somewhat underfiltered compared to what i'd like to be running.

so switching them over to my 90g would be much better than using that entire 90g for ONE fish, essentially. the super soft/brown water parameters would be maintained on the 55g..and there would be gravel for the guy to play in....UGH.

i wish there was a "do this, and now it'll be gold" type of deal somewhere...but all part of the ride i guess :)

My question is as I really don't remember where I read this up somewhere about those guys loving the current and yellowing up when there is a very strong current. I could be wrong and read about another species could this be related to the current not the water quality or in combination of both? How is the current in your tank?

current right now is a fluval 405 at max flow and also an AC110 at max flow, both on the left side of the tank as you look at it...the fish has always hung around the left side of the tank. ive had the water level dropped to increase surface agitation but it got to the point where i couldn't hear my alarm to wake up in the morning :P

i used to also run an 1140 lph marineland powerhead...but wasn't sure if it was too much current. anyone's thoughts on this? i'll get some flicks up i took last night.

here are a couple of my guy now.. :nilly:
as you can see, the underside of him is very yellow, along the underside of his snout...

also looks like his sides yellowing maybe?
theyre REALLY pokey

Dude watch your L-114. I know he is kinda small but those pseudas can be real bastards. I would not trust my 11 inch L-114 with anything close to his size as he would see it as a challenge. Incidently he ignores small 2-3 inch plecos and any non bottum dwellers regardless of size, just that pseudas have those hooks and spines and know how to use them.

I also have one im trying to yellow up.....
Hes in my grow out tank for my Dats..
Tank mates are some Dats, a few Plecos, and a Jardini..
