Need help I.D. my piranha?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the picture in the article does look like a rhom, and a nice looking one too.
When I look at the first two pictures I thought it's a rhom then I saw the last picture and thought, um...could be a compressus too...
here's are some pictures of compressus from the hobbyist piranha album section on OPEFE

comps don't have red eyes

I've never seen an actual S. compressus with red eyes. That alone rules out comp IMO.

To say that compressus' do not have red eyes is completely wrong. Almost all compressus' I've seen ever, begin having rusty colored eyes at around 4". Getting redder as they age.

I'm going to post some pictures that I do not have permission to post which may get me in trouble but...Its for everyones good right? lol.

Spotting/barring travels well beyond the lateral line on one specimen pictured. Of coarse the amount of spotting varies greatly from fish to fish. It is true that barring is present in most comps. But that only points you a certain direction. There are a number of fish ID'd as "Compressus CF's" that don't have barring at all. If anything, thats what I believe this fish in question is.

Comps also have a distinctive caudal fin pattern. It consists of dark tissue, a band of hyaline/white tissue, and a terminal black band of dark tissue. This fish lacks this pattern.

To me, what you're describing here is exactly what is pictured in the op's second pic.

the caudal pattern on the second pic does show the a similiar pattern to S. compressus. i'll concede that. it's certainly not textbook, but it's possible.

for everyone of these pics showing an oddball serra that might be a comp and might have a red eye, I bet I could post three that fit the text book description of S. compressus and do not have a red eye.

well ill go with a rhom i have a compressus and it does have some what red eyes their more Orange then red ... guy at my LFS said it was a black dimond for 100 and i had to buy it .. but it wasent.. =( sad.. he're some pix of mine S.comp let me know what you guys think.

i was thinking does the tank size matter.? i figured if you keep a fish in a small tank it wont grow as fast right ... well how big is your tank? marilyn

you know you may be right joe.

sanchezi is easy to confirm.

OP take a super close up of the scutes.

possible. but I've never seen any sanchezi with this little red, but that can be some factors to cause that

I have him in a 130 gallon tank and i posted my fish in piranha fury, piranha cove and its either a rhom, compress or sanz. so i guess i will wait and see if he grows up over 10 inches he now is around 6.5 to 7 inches.
