Need Help just bought Firemouth

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
this guy looks pretty big.. i placed him back in the 35 last night by himself after changing half the water out of it... after he was in there for a little while i put in some epsom salt so far today ive been keeping an eye on him since 4 am he seems to be hovering bout 3 inches from the bottom moving around here and there but never really any higher to explore the tank. still no signs of eating ive noticed him pooping a little looks kind of small and stringy but not completely white looks somewhat brown from what i could see. i was wondering if i should do another water change? i read about adding rock salt incase of parasites but i do not know what is meant by rock salt. only rock salt i know of is the stuff i put down in winter to get rid of ice. i sent someone to pick up some melafix and aquarium salt... but if this rock salt is better please inform me of what it is.

If you feel the need to add anything, add the aquarium salt at 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons of water. Unless there are open wounds I would avoid the melafix for now. If the FM is the only fish in the tank, weekly W/Cs will be fine. Exercise patience here, the fish needs time, at this point don't keep feeding in excess, the FM will eat when comfortable.

:iagree:

I've had great success with all kinds of illnesses using the medicines based on tea tree oil: Melafix and Primafix. Both smell like eucalyptus. They are made with an emulsifier so they work in the water better than the straight oil, but honestly, I've even used the straight-up oil with significantly good results. Just like for people, the natural remedy (tea tree) comes from Australia and is a natural fungicide, germicide, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial -- DOESN'T have all the negative side effects of other AMA (american medical association) medicines, so it can be added liberally without fear of future problems. Best of luck!!!

One thing I forgot to mention in previous posts, run your temp a little warmer80-82 degrees, if not already doing so.

Any updates?

i have got the temperature in the low 80's. ive noticed he has been swimming around the tank but only when ive got the lights off and im no where around. with the slightest movement he goes back under the driftwood. it also looks like his vertical stripes lightened to a now dark horizontal bar on his body. also i added just a little melafix to the tank, figured it wouldnt hurt maybe help his fins to grow back. i did a water change today trying not to stress him out and i added a little more aquarium salt. still dont believe hes upto eating dont know how long he can go without. id make a video clip if itd be easier to diagnose but i cant upload it with this operating system. dont want to seem to be a pain with my continuous posting but i just figure you all might have more good opinions.

it looks as though when he swims hes hesitant - almost going backwards when going to move forward and ive noticed a few times that his head shakes a little and it doesnt look like it would indicate a sign of aggression.

my firemouth has now this large white fuzz on his bottom lip ive been putting melafix in the tank for the last couple days since i got him from the store but it doesnt seem to be curing it and he is still not eating. please help.

When my jewels got in a fight and BOTH developed cotton mouth, I used melafix to cure it. Saved one, lost the other... so there are no guarantees. Remember it taking awhile tho'. And yes, they didn't eat while seriously infected... about a week or so. And YES, I was as panicked as you are!

thanks everyone. ive switched to treating with a product called Fungus Guard. its a bluish powder, put in the first dose last night and just did the second dose after another water change. looked today like most all the fungus disappeared after the first dose and i noticed him stretching his mouth a little bit today so hopefully with the second dose it all disappears and after another water change ill see if hes hungry.
