My two spotted gars are always floating on the surface of the tank and they never dive. I know that they can breathe air in oxygen poor waters but i have two filters and not alot of tankmates. How can i get my gars diving?

When I kept Gars, they would love to sit just below the surface. I'm sure someone else on here can give you a better explanation but I think its just how gars are, its one of the things that they do.

i agree with^. this is why bowfishing for gars is so popular. they will lumber around on the surface and not have to exert much energy diving and then come up for air.

thats how my gar is... either floats on top or lays on the bottom haha.

they breathe air from the atmosphere and not from the water. they will always be near the surface. drop a large shrimp on the bottom if you want him to dive haha

That is not 100% true, while they have vascularised swim bladders that can take air from atmosphere it is usually done more often, if the water is stagnant, warm or low oxygen levels ( not saying your tank is stagnant water) but they do take oxygen from water. Try an air stone if bothers you

I think my gar spend less time at the top than any other level of the tank.
