With spotted gars their natural habitat is plants i suggest decking the tank out with thin val plants and get them comfortable.

My gar usually stays about mid-top of the tank as well. at night time, or when the light is off, he will start to get lower to the gravel and swim around. < read up about it, thats just how they are.

Thats true. I've just noticed that they started to dive around at night or after feeders, even sometime randomly sit at the bottom.
