if i bought a product like cycle or prime to make the bb that a new tank would need and i was using a canister filter with carbon in it would the carbon remove the product like it would when using medication? i am trying to find the most efficient/quickest way to set up my tank and make sure my fish dont die.

thanks for the reply but i really need advice from someone that has a canister. i guess i could take the carbon out until i get all the bb i need and then put it back in once my tank cycles but idk. im setting up my tank this week, starting tomorrow, so i need to know asap!

Prime is not a bb product, it removes chlorine, and de-toxifies ammonia and nitrite, but to answer your question, carbon in your filter will not effect the cycling of a new aquarium.

i dont know for certain if the carbon would remove it or not but i can tell you just put the fish in and wait a month but test your water and if the levels are high do water changes. it will cycle itself eventually. cycling is not as important as everyone makes it out to be or as harmful to the fish unless youre keeping angel or discus fish. but usually those instant bacteria products dont work anyway they have the wrong bacteria in them and they know that people like you and me have little patientce when it comes to things like this so theyll sell it lol. time will take care of it just make sure youre using a dechlorinator the tank has been running for a few days and is the right temp. good luck

Cycling is not as important as everyone makes it out to be:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

i read that keeping the temperature a little high (but still within my fish's limits) will help speed up bacteria growth too so i will probably do that. i havent used prime yet so i apologize for any preconceived notion about me knowing about it lol. but anyways i do use water conditioner of course but i just want to make sure that the carbon wont harm anything in the building process. so should i use the carbon in my fluval 405 to begin with or leave it out and just leave the biomax and some other bio sponges from my old tank? does everyone else agree that the products that keep the tank stable are useless? thanks for your replies by the way!

i would use carbon. i dont know where you got the tank from or if youve had it for a long time but if its been sitting empty or someone has used medications in it there may be some residual contaminants and the carbon will remove them. the only thing itll hurt if you decide to use it is your wallet and its not that expensive. i use zeocarb cause it converts the ammonia to a nontoxic form through an ion exchange process and its mixed with carbon. and the only point i was making about cycling was that there will be ammonia build up initially and to have some in the tank will not kill the fish. just test the water and if its high change the water. if you dont overstock it you should be able to get away with a weekly water change to temporarily remove ammonia until the thank is cycled (usually about a month) and depending on your stock level you can adjust the maintenance. dont get me wrong its important but it doesnt accomplish anything a water change cant. obviously other than bacterial conversion.

OP. please do not listen to this guy. He has no idea what he is talking about. You NEED to cycle a tank, and NO, water changes wont do the same thing.

Use seachem stability. It works, and allows instant adding of fish. And for the love of god don't listen to go navy. Any other member on here that knows anything will tell you that he is wrong.
