Hey guys. Im going to build a new fish tank in my back yard. its going to be a 17'*3'*3.5' cement tank but glass on the front side. Im hopeing to put 2 pices of 8.5'*3.5' glass. So my qu is.
1. How much thick should the glass be?
(ITS GOING TO BE A 1337.1 GALLON)
2. Will the pressure of the water brake the glass??

Plese help me asap.

I'm getting 29mm (3.8 safety factor) down to 24mm (2.5 safety factor) for glass thickness 42" tall. These ratings assume some form of bracing.

Water pressure will deflect the glass and if deflection is sufficient, it will fail (crack) leading to leakage or worse. Bracing will help reduce deflection to an extent, but only to an extent.

You indicated cement, but I wonder if you meant reinforced concrete. A reinforced concrete aquarium with properly sized glass will work as an aquarium.

Here are a couple related discussions that you might find interesting:

Yes. Wer going to use reinforced concret. Its going to be like this. A concreat plato the bottem of the tank. And also walls in the back and the sides are going to be concreat. The front side im thinking about putting two pices of glass connected in the middle by silicone. And after the silicone its going to be seald off bya 4" thick concreat beam right where the the two glases get joined.
And more healp are welcomed

One of the links mentioned an issue using silicon with concrete, so the suggestion was made to use steel frames and silicon (with the glass inside the frames.) Not sure if someone else can comment on that point, but there are threads on MFK with concrete builds worth reviewing.

Wow. You mean i should put the two pices of glass in a steel frame useing silicone to stick it in place and use concreat to cover up the frame

I'm not saying that!!

I'm saying people raised some issues on using silicon with concrete. I mentioned it as I noted it in one of the threads.
