I wouldn't do it.

If you want to act as a halfway house you could try adding a tank divider and (as mentioned previously) slowly acclimate the oscar before dropping him in. At least that would get him in some clean water and maybe with a tiny bit more room.

Why don't you school your friend up on keeping clean water & whatnot instead and in the meantime advertise on CL or ask around the LFS in the area to see if they'd take em.

the o deff. has different water needs than the africans, as well as different diet needs, the foods that would help him prosper will give the africans bloat. and of course one day hes goin to see the as lunch, and you goin to lose some of the africans.

thanks for the help and sorry about the caps..
i know the two types of fish need different water parameters but i also know that he lives down the road so our tap water would be the same so the fish are in the same type of water right now

he is getting rid of the oscar because he just bought a house and doesnt want to take him with

What we are saying about water parameters isn't so much about the two of you having the same source of water. It's about PH, water hardness, and temp. Oscars and African Cichlids have different requirements in these catagories. African Cichlids need more than tap water to live healthy. If the Africans have been living a long time without their proper requirements, maybe it will be safe to add the O. I wouldn't do it myself. My African Cichlid tank water is a lot different from my Central Amer. tank.

my ph is at about 7.2 right now for my africans wouldnt that be fine for the oscar also... and hes been fed spirulana pellets for a long time my friend says and thats what i feed my bigger cichlids... i dunno i think it would work or should i just take him into the lfs
