Need help pickin' a plec

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a watermelon pleco that destroys my zucchini overnite it that helps

Thanks for the info guys, but I'll have to put buying a new pleco off for a bit. I got a fire eel at the same time as the Goldie, and didn't have a qt tank so just acclimated and put them in my main tank. I had bought stuff from this shop before without issue and figured it would be fine. Now have a terrible case of ich (I think, it's nasty whatever it is). Lost the eel and the Goldie plus all my oddball clowns. Sucks.

sorry about your losses. if you still have fish in there raise your tank temp to 87 deg and increase surface agitation to put more oxygen in the water and kill off the ich. if no fish are left you should go even higher with the temp leave it there for at least 2 weeks in either case.

been there before, just learn from your mistake and move forward.

Thanks. Yeah, I still have a couple fish holding on; the LDA033, two hericthys carpinintis escondidos, and a hoplarchus psittacus. They were looking like swimming zombies for a while, but I think they turned the corner a bit (fingers crossed). Temp is at 84, added salt and meds. Just hoping they pull through. I think the shop is going to take care of me though.

if you've had success with that method in the past stick to what works for now. i personally don't usually like to add salt and meds until a last resort because it can further stress the fish and lead to "medication resistant" ich that will be much harder to get rid of in the future. from most of the reading i have done almost all strains of ich are incapable or reproducing above 85-86 degrees. i've always had success raising the temp to 87 and increasing the aeration for a time span of 2 weeks to make sure there aren't any ich capsules hanging around. good luck with your treatment and hopefully you can salvage the rest of your fish.

I have a long fin white bristle nose

oh so nice looking- however he/she is in with Dwarf Cichlids

would a large Oscar eat them?

Thanks for the advice. It came on fast and seemed like an emergency to me, so I added the salt and meds. First time I have had this happen in about 6 years of fishkeeping. I may turn the heat up a touch though. Thanks again.

If anyone cares, the remaining fish seem to be getting better. They ate last night and have started to chase each other around again. I'll keep the remedy up for another week or so to be sure. Thanks again for your imput jbar.

glad to hear they are showing signs of improvement. if you are sure the culprit is ich, make sure you keep up treatment for 10 to 14 days after the last signs of ich cysts on your fish as long as the fish are tolerating the treatment ok. ich "eggs" can lay dormant for a long time in the gravel and suspended in the water. the most important factor is the temperature to make sure it can't continue to reproduce or you will never get rid of it. if you are curious google "reproductive cycle of ich", its very imortant to undertand the 3 stages of its cycle in order to stop it from coming back in the future. the worst thing you can do is stop treatment early because often times you will end up with more resistant forms of the parasite that will be harder to get rid of if it comes back. keep up the good work on your treatment.
