NEED HELP PICKING A CHEAP FILTER!!!!!!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks guys! well im going to keep the 2 AC110 on there i just wanted to add a canister just for extra media! i mean the 110 work perfect! water is crystal clear! i wouldnt reeally need an fx5 or anything... lol just needed something where i could just have extra media

I run 2 ac110's and a powerhead stuck to a sponge filter on my 125 with no problems. Instead of the factory AC110 bio/mech/chem inserts I stuff them full of pillow stuffing with a homemade bag of those ceramic rings on top.

The powerhead on the sponge filter does really well at creating a nice current in my tank and anything the 110's dont suck up, the powerhead sucks into or around the sponge. This makes cleaning very easily as most of the poop will move towards the sponge filter. I usually clean the sponge in a 5 gallon of tank water during wc's and it is always filthy. To me this is easier than having to unpack and repack a canister all the time.

hmm... sounds good i will try that then!

good luck! I so dislike canisters & so like AC110's. but may I suggest a DIY for one of your units by extending intake tube with pvc & make a tee at bottom so it can scoop swoop up the heavier setting poop!

Ya, the sponge filter with a good powerhead will cost maybe 50 or 60 bucks, or just look on craigslist and pick up something cheep. I got a fluval 304 for like 25 bucks one time and use that to supplement the HOB's on my 75.

Could always build a sump, i know mine with overflow, pump, tub, media, prob ran me no more than $40. Everything is diy also gives me the ability to put plants in it since the oscars don't really put up with plants in their tank. Using a Rubbermade tub, DIY PVC overflow, Quilt batting from the craft store, pump from Harbor freight, clamp light, CFL, and java moss.
