thanks all i wasnt really worried about the motors mainly the fish thanks so much. yall are very educated in the fish world and i appreciate it.
 
honestly, go to a pool store and get filter sand. It is heavier so the chances of it getting into your filter are smaller. Looks better too. Play sand won't kill you fish if you wash it well, but it is worse for growing plants in, and makes a mess in your tank when a fish decides to go crazy.

i agree. sand could def. kill a filter motor. HOB filters pull the water through the motor, then push it through the filter media. other than that...no harm can be done using play sand.
