My wife is going to kill me or my fish soon if I don't quiet my tank down. I have a 225 gallon tank and a large sump. Currently using a Mag24, and it is really loud.

I am considering using sound dampening material on the inside of the stand, but I also know the Pump is much louder then the last pump I had.

What pump would be the best replacement in terms of GPH, but quieter?

I have been running a Jebao DCP-5000 for many years and it is very quiet. I just got my new DCP-20000 plumbed and running yesterday. It has a very minimal hum at full power. The hum is as much the water running through my 1.5" plumbing as it is the pump itself (My plumbing is still purging air). At about 75% power the hum disapears. For my 180g it looks like 50% power will give more than enoiugh flow for my tank.

I am very pleased with my DCP-20000. I have read that they will actually get quieter after several days of running, If the very slight hum on mine does not get quieter I will still be very pleased with it.

I used to use Mag pumps (including the 2400 and yes they are quite noisy, the hum, but also the vibration noise.
This can be tempered but using sponge, Porett foam and other dampening material under the pump, but also on any plumbing that touches a hard surface.

notice the sponge between the plumbing and the wall of the sump above.
I did give up on the Mag drives about a decade ago, and have now switched to Sicci pumps and find they are much quieter.
I believe te video below might be helpful from BRS on you tube.

I'm a jebao convert too. And I too think it's always wise to get a model or two UP on what you actually need. After all, in our hobby the potential upgrade is just round the corner. Your pump will then slot nicely in your new set up by just turning the variable speed setting up to accommodate your increased turnover. It's win win.

What is your return line made out of? If it is all hard PVC, vibrations will definitely make it louder. I recommend using some clear vinyl tubing from Lowe's directly from the pump, transitioning to PVC after 8 inches or so.
