Need help reducing nitrates (I know, old question)

Thanks for the education, Rivermud. I was going to get two plants but this was the last one at Home Depot that day. I have it in one of my overflows so if there was any potting material left on the roots it is long gone from the system. It would have gone into the filter socks. I am thinking about putting a planter over my sump and diverting water to it and drain back to sump. This tank is in the living room and the sump is in the fishroom on the other side of that wall. I would never get away with that in the living room!

op, when your pathos starts growing some parts will start to die off and might fall back in the water, you pretty much have to maintain the plant too. prune it and such. cause if dead plant matter falls back into the water those nitrates go right back in to your system.
