Hello,

I just acquired a 29 gal aquarium. The previous owner had put down some tape to hold a paper towel in place where he placed all the items included in the tank. How do I get it out? I have tried rubbing alcohol and a new sponge but it is barely making a dent in this damn tape. How harmful will this be when i add fish if it is not removed, and does anyone have any aquarium friendly fixes to my problem? Thanks!

I realize this thread may be in the wrong forum. My apologies.
Whenever you make a thread that is in the wrong place, has some wrong information, or see someone else’s thread that is what I said above go to the bottom of the first post and report it. You’ll get a little box where you can write a message for the mods to see. Something as simple as “needs to be moved” or “please change it from free to for sale” if it’s a marketplace thread. I reported it for you so the mods will move it for you.

Good luck getting the residue off comrade

Single edge razor blade at a 35 degree angle. Don't dig at it expecting the tape to come off in one pass. Take your time and the blade will get it all off.

I used to do it on brand new Mercedes Benz and Audi if the painter got shotty on their mask job. Freaked out the dealers but hey I went to school to make cars look amazing. Took the hardened paint off without scratching laminated glass will do just fine with tank glass.

This beats leaving butter on overnight, actually works somewhat, thanks Dad.

Try vinegar. I restored my wifes old tank that she hot glued shells and taped crap all over. Took days and much scrubbing, scraping and I smelled like antipasto salad for a week but it worked. You can also soak it in wd-40 if outside the tank and carefully razor blade it off. Careful not to smear. That actually got me into the hobby. Now we have 5 tanks. Starting from scratch is great for learning.

Multiple possible solutions. I often use Orange oil-- I use it for multiple things, it's a good cleaner for some things, including some greases and sticky substances, kills odors, kills many bugs and flying insects, which want no part of it, so if you want to discourage a wasp or hornet flying too close... Will also remove unhardened sap off cars, though there are better products for that. It's a natural product but be careful with it around some (not all) plastics and it burns a bit if left on your skin or gets in your lungs.

--Walmart has it, among other places.
