Yup my friend has a dovii male without a tail lol. We call him stumpy ! keen to see if the big guy will be able to swim straight when he gets around 2ft. so far his fine and happy.

I believe in giving the fish a shot. sometimes things just have the will to survive if its able to swim and once healed still wants to eat no need to kill the poor guy!
 
Holy CRAP, that is a bad bite!

I'd try to save it. I'm a sucker for hard luck cases though.
 
Sorry for your loss but I kinda thought this would happen. So far with my experience with gars, they are pretty adventurous with their food. They will try to eat even if they are just slightly hungry. They are very much like Oscars with bigger eyes than their mouths.
