Hi guys, So my 6" silver arowana has not been eating for the past week, I read around and it seemed normal for arowanas to skip meals for awhile sometimes.

But my arow seems to have developed a problem! His tail is disintegrating, Its starting to look like a skeleton and is not his full tail anymore! And he's super jumpy like hes scared (he was not like that)

Can you guys give me a check list to check? How can I help the poor fellow?

He lives in a 55G right now and the other fish all look good and are eating healthy meals every day. The PH is around 6.5-7.5

Also He lived in that tank for a good month and was eating healthy and not jumpy like he is now. I haven't changed anything in the tank since then.

His tank mates can be stressing him out...I would also not just check ur ph but test ur nitrate and amonia level...And lastly I would look into buying a bigger tank for him...

hi sp23.. like the previous post suggests please check your water parameters.. what are the aros tankmates? i'd really suggest you move the aro by itself to another tank.. fresh water.. lots of aeration.. some salt.. and an established filter.. and yes a heater temp set at like 26 C.. switch off lights.. prob keep a zero watt on.. keep us posted.. cheers.. hope this gets sorted soon for you..

If the tail is showing bones chances are he's being picked on by a bigger meaner fish if you don't move him he's gonna die

Thanks for the replies guys!

He couldn't be getting picked on because his tank mate is only a fat goldfish.

I will test the ammonia and nitrate what should the levels be around for an arowana?

Oh and his tail doesn't look like its being picked it looks like his fins are just getting ripped or falling apart. :(

I will check and let you guys know. Thanks

And yes he will be getting a bigger tank as he grows. I plan on getting a custom 325g for him.

.

If you don't already know this, I would suggest that you do some research of the nitrogen cycle as it pertains to aquariums. Without this knowledge you are only relying on luck to have a successful aquarium.

Hard to say for sure, a pic would help, but it may be fin rot which is caused by poor water quality.

your tank/filter should cycled already by now if done right
sounds like your arowana is advance stress state or possibly fin rot (i cant tell without pic), whats the temp on the tank?
jumpy/skittish is normal for arowana that size not eating is not for that size.
the fat goldfish might not picking on him but it might freak due to the size and goldfish behavioral? means the aro in extreme defense mode all the time

Thanks I appreciate the responses. A stupid person at the pet store told me I should add a whole handful of aquarium salt to my 55g. I added a couple spoon fulls, but not a handful and the fish seemed to not like that at all they started to get a little slimy so I did a 30% water change and the fish seem to be more lively right now.

I appreciate your patience with me, I've always liked fish I've only just begun to actually look deeper into how to properly raise an arowana and I'm still learning. I'll look deeper into the nitrate cycle and hopefully become a better fish keeper :)
