Need help to identify the type of flowerhorn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Generally I would say yes Kamfa could be somewhat slower growing then ZZ but not always. Though It would depend on the exact genetic makeup and it is not always as simple as Kamfa or ZZ as there are degrees to the proportions of exact blood of each species that the hybrid makes up depending on the lineage of the specific FH and generation of lineage. Yours appears to be a later generation Kamfa as a 1st gen Kamfa to my recollection is a ZZ Flowerhorn x vieja blood. Then each generation after that is just crossing back to the ZZ and gradually thinning out the vieja blood whilst inbreeding the genes and refining the bloodline.
F1=ZZ x 50-100% vieja blood
F2=F1 25-50% vieja blood x ZZ
F3=F2 12.5-25% vieja blood x ZZ
F4= F3 6.25-12.5% vieja blood x ZZ
And so on and so forth…

A little bit of vieja blood can go a long way as it has high influence on the hybrid. I would guess yours could be an F3 or F4 Kamfa possibly but indeed it is a Kamfa even though it almost resembles an SRD. But likely being a later gen Kamfa and actually being mostly ZZ genetically explains that away.

Short answer: Yes, No, Maybe so.
I will ask though.
Tank size?
Tank temp?
WC schedule?
Feeding?
Also probably has something to do with it being short-body. It won’t get quite as big anyways.
Thanks for the detailed explanation.

Current tank size: 30 gallon but will upgrade to 55 gallon soon
Tank temp: 30degree celsius
WC schedule: 1 week 80%
Feeding: twice a day (Okiko plat & hikari bio gold with regular freeze dried shrimp & black fry larvae)

life expectancy is around 2 years?

Every week I measure the water parameter

Ammonia & nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 10ppm

Ok everything sounds nice all around. WC schedule and Water Quality, Great. Feeding, very good except okiko isn’t great food imo and freeze dried is not easy on the digestive track. Tank temp is ideal while he is growing but you’re going to want to dial that back a bit too 26-28 when he’s you can tell he’s done growing. Definitely upgrade too the full sized 4 foot tank asap. 55g will do the trick. That’s major setback right now as far as growth and development goes.

I think don’t think the genetics alone will limit the life expectancy to that degree all though it very well could. It’s more so going to depend on the quality of husbandry/care you maintain over his lifespan. You could get more like 4-6years ideally If you keep a healthy fish. Short body isn’t too big of a deal. I’m sure there are some increased risks but again if you keep a healthy fish it really won’t hinder lifespan considerably. Blood parrots the most common SB fish seem to have a long life span, many I’ve seen live 10+years, now Flowerhorn of course, have a different case but short body isn’t a major cause but can be a correlation. In breeding, it’s a very low threshold for short body showing up in batches. You don’t even have to give much inbreeding at all or any at all for that matter to breed a shortbody fish.

Want to check what other brand of pellet will you recommend? This is because I prefer to feed a variety of pellets instead of just sticking to one type.

Will take note of your advice! Thanks!

The hikari bio-gold is solid in the rotation. Depends on what you can get your hands on. Northfin and New Life Spectrum are the greats, Northfin being more palatable for most fish then NLS ime. Omega one is pretty good. There’s definitely others that would be good in rotation but that’s what’s on the top of my head. Depends on your options really in your location. You really want to go for regular cichlid pellets and usually not Flowerhorn marketed pellets which can be gimmicky and not long term health conscious.

I had bad experience with NLS because my fish reject it haha I’m in Asia so north fin is hard to obtain haha I will source for other type then! Thanks for the information! Appreciate it!

Can check for the new life spectrum food. Will you recommend Thera A as the staple food?
