Need help with a rainbow id.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would disagree with red rainbow from the first picture.

I can't lie. I'm still hopefull that it is a boesemani just because the largest is starting to develop two colors to him. I've seen some pics of them as adults with no black line half way through their body. Time will tell tho. Either way the three fish are a beautiful addition to my tank.

nope, not a bosemani, this is a juvenile. the females are very blue green, no red at all.
I'll go with the irian red voters.

Ya, I picked up two bosemani rainbows today at pet smart. I can see now that the three in question are definitely not bosemani. I'm going with the red votes as well. Should still be a good looking fish for my tank tho.

They are awesome as are bosemani and turquoise rainbows. As adults they all shine together in a display tank. One thing on the reds is usually only the dominant male or males if you have enough will be in full color and the other males will look close to the way the two of yours do now. As the dominant males energy stores are depleted from being in constant breeding mode they will fade and the others will become the new dominant and color up. It is the most brilliant orange/red with a sort of glow that you can imagine where the colors of the bosemani is almost neon glowing colors. The bosemani and turquoise pretty much are always in color just a tiny bit duller when not in breeding mode. Anyways one of the coolest fishes that are very versatile as they look great in specimen tanks, peaceful community tanks and as dithers in more aggressive tanks. They can adjust pretty easy to hard or soft water and at least neutral to high ph water. For years i kept bosemani and turquoise with several of my african cichlid tanks. I used both these species for summertime mosquito control here in western washington in my outside lily and lotus pools. In the winter they would come inside into 55's with the tropical lilies. I am now missing them since reading this topic and others mentioning them so might be heading out to get some again soon.

Ok before I get to excited. These were marked bosemani at pet smart. Are they? The fish in question is just below center of the picture. Sorry for the bad pic, its the best I could get after a half hour of sitting in front of the tank.

Yes i believe the fish lowest in the pic is a bosemani. If you look you can see the faint vertical bar mid body. It is a young fish and may not be at full color for this size so could be either sex. The fish just above it and to the left is a male red rainbow and from the fish in the pic the dominant fish in the tank. If you want another red he would be a good grab as would the bosemani no matter the sex if price is right for you.

So I'll start off with the bad news first. I lost the bosemeni yesterday. I'm 98% it choked on a blood worm. When I fed bloodworms and brine shrimp yesterday, all was fine for about four minutes. I noticed my bosemeni swimming funny, then would jerk his entire body. Once I realized he was choking, it was to late. I watched him go belly up, I tried to move him through the filter current to try and get water over his gills, at that time the evidence showed. About four bloodworms came out of his mouth.

On the other side, the rainbows that I still don't know what they are have grown some. Anyone think they are big enough for a positive id?

Here is the group of three in one shot. uploadfromtaptalk1393149222236.jpg

Sorry for the shotty pics. I can spend six hours in front of the tank, they don't move. Buy the second I get my phone out to take pictures, game over.

And one last one. Picked up this guy last week, he was marked as a parkinsoni (spell check?) Rainbow. uploadfromtaptalk1393149404046.jpg
