I used pool filter sand for the large regular rounded grains, and I am very happy. A very fine gravel would have also pleased me

There is no "rule of thumb" that will maintain your tank at any specific salinity for very long, what with water changes, over time. Buy a refractometer and measure the water directly. Most brackish fish do well over at least a moderate range of salinity, but know what is appropriate for your fish.

Marine salt only. Iwould thiink that's the same as reef salt.

Mangrove are tricky, and your set up doesn't sound ideal. I've never had luck, but giev it a whirl. ebay, aquabid, this site are all good places to look.

Now I’m curious what fish you are getting J You got me interested when you came right out and said you won’t tell what species.

I'm curious myself considering I have a brackish tank also. I used reef sand to help keep the hardness 8.0. I have a violet goby, mollies and several orange chromide
which I keep the salt level around 1.007

Sounds like a nice set-up Roper!

What fish are you planning for?

ya i might get flamed for posting the fish cause most people think a 10 is too small, but not for the specific species i found. i would really like to see that pix of your tank man. it sounds cool with mollies and a goby!
