thanks dr joe, as far i understand you are saying to use drawing 1 but just add a pre filter to the water pump?

i will be setting up pond around 640 gallons so i am thinking i am going to need a really big container to use as a filter.

also are the scrubbies a cheaper solution for the bio balls or are they to use as the pre filter for the water pump?

A course pre-filter on the pump inlet and a finer pre-filter on top of the bio-media.

Do you have a Dw you have to answer to about esthetics's (read pretty)?

You can use a couple of 35g plastic barrels or 1 55g barrle if you have the room.

Scrubbies 6 for a $1.00 US ... Bio-Balls $1.00 US each ... Lava rock $5.00 / 30lbs.

sorry about another question but since the lava rock is bio as well does that mean i can just use loads of it by its self or use loads of bio balls by their selfs, not needing to use them together? if so which will work best?

Don't apologize for asking questions, it would be very dull around here without them.

Use a pre-filter first and you can use any of them by themselves (there is no reason to combine them unless you already have some of one type or cannot afford / find a large quantity of one kind).

With a pre-filter Lava rock will last a year or three before its pores are filled with gunk (technical term). It dosen't lend itself to cleaning well.

thanks for the links dr joe, i dont have much room and i already have a 30 gallon bin so i think iam just going to get another 1.

but how do you link them together? would i just use a pvc pipe or something similar to join them or do you mean i should make 2 seperate ones?

also sorry but i dont get what you mean by a dw (i am new to all this forum stuff so i dont know all the abbreviations) lol
