I am going to buy a 55 gallon that I saw in the paper. It comes with a hood, 2 filters, and 2 heaters. I dont know what kind of filters it comes with and I will most likely have to get new ones. I dont have too much money but I was wondering which kind of filters are best for a 55 gallon. I will be putting cichlids in the tank.

Hey there, fellow Cbusian (not sure if that worked)...Oh I as well am a long time Browns fan, matter of fact my family has had season tickets for 35 years. With a 55 G, I would probably go with a HOB, either a Aquaclear 110 or Emperor 400. IF you go to Petsmart's website and print out the prices for these, they will match their on-line price. Get some additional bio-filtration, cell pore will work awesome with those 2 filters.....

By the way, I'm going to be selling a 110G Acrylic with a built in wet/dry in about a month if you know of anyone that is looking.

Hopefully the two you get will work. I would add a canister to the setup. I use fluval and am very happy with them. I guess it depends on how many cichlids your talking and adult sizes.

I have two Whipser 60 on my 55 gallon, thats all I have ever had! They work just fine! But with any HOB, they tend to get noisey, so thats why at the moment I am currently replacing the HOB's with Rena Filstar XP1 canister filters. Canisters are better filters and are NEAR SILENT, I have to put my hand or ear on mine to make sure that it is still running. Also with a canister, you only have to clean in like once a month! Just an Idea.

I say use 2 AC110, especially if you're on a budget...It comes with the media...bigals should have them for a great price...

I agree AC's are great! but they are louder and for a couple bucks more, depending on where you by them(the AC's) you could have a better filter in a Canister.

I'd take AC hang on back filters over an XP series canister any day. I have an XP3 and I'm not impressed. Sure it's quiet but its pretty weak.
I've had much better luck with AC filters, and I've never had one get loud (with the exception of an occasional lid rattle). To me the AC's are easier to clean because you dont have as much water inside the filter (like you do with the XP3). Every time I clean the XP3 I end up with water all over when I take the baskets out.

Id use whatever comes with it and see how it works out before running out and spending more money

rallysman - wouldnt you say the xp3 has a big advantage in media capacity?> Surely the AC has only a small amount of media?
