Need Help With Fish Tank smelling

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A water change once per month on an oscar tank, is probably why it smells, and that you like to see them eat so the water is probably 50% fish urine and metabolism by-products.
I'd say you need minimum 50% water change once per week .
I personally would do more, I norma;;y do 30-40% every other day on tanks with large fish. I also think you are a bit light on filtration, when companies rate their filters they are rated foe a community of small fish like Bettas, gouramis and angels, not oscars. I'd filter much more , by adding 3 or 4 HOBs to the tank, especially with such a lax water change schedule.
i do weekly 25-50% water changes

LOL no one asked what size of tank this s.??? i would do at least 3 50% WC on a Oscar tank no matter tank size or filtration
its a 60 gallon grow out tank my oscars are juveniles like 3-5inchs just waiting on the right deal for a big aquarium like a 180 gallon or bigger and i have at least 2-3 more months before i have to upgrade so plz dont tell me tht the tank is too small I know that

I have had tank smells before. Using carbon or some sort of odor remover just masks the problem and does not solve it. A consistent odor is an indicator of a bigger issue possibly being:
- Filters not sufficiently established or not being able to support the stock
- Debris/excess food or something else is stuck somewhere and causing the odor and other potential harm on your tank

Typically, certain foods can make the tank smell but that should be temporary. When my tank smelt, it would be that I would hope the door to the room and get hit in the face with a smell that should not be there. Doing extra water changes, filter cleaning and searching the tank for excess food helped.

I never said your tank was to small i just said you should do more WC for a Oscar

Since the tank smells, something is off, so maybe you need to vacuum with every water change. It may be with only 1 vac per month, hydrogen sulfide pockets are building up in the substrate, occasionally burping up unpleasant odors. And the only way to get a handle on them is more vacuuming.
What is the type smell? rotton eggs? fishy? ???

I’m not sure what kinda smell you had, but keep an eye on your tap water. Whenever my water smells off it’s normally because my well water has some kinda change. My ammonia spiked in my well and it made the water smell awful.
Just thought I’d throw that out there.
