HI everyone i bought one of these and at first thought it suppose to be true freshwater but the more i read i think i need to add some salt... does anyone here have them? and any advice will help me keep him healthy. I have 150g tank with 2 oscars now... would adding salt affect the oscars?

thanks again

I'd be interested to hear if anybody keeps them in full freshwater, also. And no, it wouldn't affect the oscars, as long as you don't make it a "brackish" tank.

thanks for the quick reply, Im new here and this forum has a ton of info looks good guys! Anyway how would i go about adding salt? how much? and what kind?

thanks

they do need alittle bit of salt. I think they do best in a tank by them self with more eels. other fish like yours are heavy and fast eaters were the eels are hide, wait and ambush eaters.

Try dividing the tank intill hes eating like a pig and more aggressive OR if you dont want to divied the tank try using a cricket/bug holder cage to put his food in with the lid open or eggcrate in top so only he can get in it to eat.

If what you have is something like a G.Tile moray, then you will need to get it into high end brackish - marine conditions as it grows older... which means you will need something like "Instant Ocean" or some other type of suitable salt that can raise your tanks salinity level, oh and don't buy the stuff they use in freshwater tanks, since that will honestly get you no where...

As for your oscars, sorry, they will not be able to live with your moray in the long run... oscars need freshwater... your moray as mentioned above needs high end brackish to marine... so unless you have a 2nd tank, maybe an idea to try and return it while you can?

+1

Well i will be getting another tank in a few weeks at most.. im gonna try and make it work with oscars until then... so you are saying use sea salt mix instead of aquarium salt as for now?

I would say dont add anything at all at this moment, reason being if you add marine salt mix to your tank then the oscars suffer, if you dont add anything your eel suffers...

So either ways its a lose/lose situation which is why its bet to return it first till you have a marine tank setup to be very honest...
