need help with freshwater moray eel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If what you have is something like a G.Tile moray, then you will need to get it into high end brackish - marine conditions as it grows older... which means you will need something like "Instant Ocean" or some other type of suitable salt that can raise your tanks salinity level, oh and don't buy the stuff they use in freshwater tanks, since that will honestly get you no where...

As for your oscars, sorry, they will not be able to live with your moray in the long run... oscars need freshwater... your moray as mentioned above needs high end brackish to marine... so unless you have a 2nd tank, maybe an idea to try and return it while you can?

+1 they need brackish and the oscars dont. It somewhat like asking if you can mix clownfish with goldfish.

aquarium salt not marine or table salt

Extreme strong disagreance.

1. I would never use "aguarium salt", ever. Nothing more than a ripp-off.
2. The "freshwater Moray Eel" that LFS's sell is not even truely a brackish fish. That is nothing short of a blatent well spread lie to attract FW customers to purchase SW fish. The Morays as babies go fresh water long enough to keep the LFS from any liability after it dies in your perfect parameter FW. If the "FW Moray" that the OP is keeping is the brown with "snowflake" spots, they are the worst. Full marine at adult and 4+ feet long!
3. Oscars have no issue with Marine salt @ 1 tblsp/ 10 gallon (I only used for ICK treatment on tank twice) with perfect success both times. This is not close to the level of salinity that your FW morays will need to reach adult. [NOT CLOSE!]. I did have obvious signs of stress from my oscars at a higher salinity level when I tried to accomodate bigger Datnoids with them (1 tsp/ gallon).
4. I have had great success keeping (FW? [LMAO] flounders 6" - 8"), (FW? [LMAO] Snowflake Morays 14" - 16") and a brackish emerald puffer (4.5") together for over a year with a heaping table (not tea) spoon of marine salt per 1 gallon for over a year, but will absolutely continue to slowly raise the salinity as they grow.

thanks, what about sea salt? not good?

Both are bad for the Oscars in any concentration approaching lower end brackish.

Aguarium salt is of absolutely no value ever. It is worthless and you should for no reason waste your money on that stuff.

Instant Ocean is easy to use and disolves quickly.

If anyone tells you of the "mineral" value in "aquarium salt" kick them in the "y". If you have fish that require certian minerals, you can buy these seperatly and get "exactly" what is required for far less $$$. Not all fish that require added Minerals all require the "same" exact minerals, and my not be in near the proper quantity within Aquarium salt for your particular species.

Rule of thumb. Aquarium salt is always -- BAD!!!

here is the eel i bought on ebay from petzone i got him today, he is very active now and is about 10 inches long. http://www.ebay.com/itm/180793947615?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 the seller said i need a mild brackish setup. I might have to move the eel to my 20g tank today until i get the new tank.. dont know how im gonna tell my wife about the 4 gold fish in the 20g tank.

so everyone agrees not to add salt and leave the eel in the oscar tank?

Dont do anything now. If you intend to keep this eel you need to set up a brackish tank. You can go to the brackish forum to see what constitutes a brackish tank. And eventually you may want to consider full marine as ive seen these eels thrive in marine tanks.

What you will need to look for is how voracious of an appetite that your Moray eel has. What you will see the majority of the time is either your Moray will not eat at all in Freshwater, or be totally out competed for food in the tank by the oscars. If you have any issue with getting the eels serious quantity of meat (fish/ crustation etc.) than they are seriously stressed at the absence or lack of salinity.

In that case, they are already desperately needing to be moved (even to the 20) at the expense of the goldfish.

I do mean voracious appetite! If they are not agressivly eating at every feeding in the FW tank, they are within a couple of months of R.I.P. You will totally freak out at the difference in appetite in these eels kept in Brackish vs. totally fresh water.

I've kept my Gymnothorax tile in freshwater for 2 years and it's been fine. It is 20 inches long now and eats like a pig. I am always watching the water conditions of the tank though because I feel that G. tile can survive in freshwater and do fine, but the are more prone to diseases in it. Mine has been perfectly healthy, but that's because I am constantly "tweeking" the water quality to keep it as close to perfect as I can. I have the back up plan of placing my G. tile into Bracksih to marine water if I notice a change in its behavior or appetite, but so far, it's been fine. Here are some pictures of my 20 inch moray in freshwater.View attachment 815644View attachment 815645
