Hey guys!

So, a buddy bought a peacock bass while owning a 75G stating it would be enough. Now the fish is obviously too big for the tank, and he wants to pass it to me since I have a 150g.

I'm on the fence about it since it seems a lot of the peacock bass get massive. I am asking for two things, if you guys can help me ID what he's trying to peddle to me, and if it's a good idea ( I am considering getting a 200G in about a year but I saw some of the Peacocks get to 3' and there's no way I'll ever have the room for that).

Thanks in advance!

Thats an Ocellaris. You could possibly keep it in a 200g for a while but they do average out around 26" so more than likely not forever. I have a 325g with some babies and Im already planning on their upgrade for that. Being as theyre not snakelike in the way silver arowanas are the rule of "the tank can hold a fish as long as the tank is wide" doesnt really apply to them. Id say the max length a 24" wide tank could hold is 18" to 20" max and thats pushing it.

Out of curiosity, since a 200g is possible, and I currently have a tank that's 18" wide. How fast do they grow? Supposedly the fish is a little over a year old. Do they have a slowish growth rate? It's about 14" now. It's just so pretty lol

they have a medium fast to extremely fast growth rate depending on how you take care of it and for every inch they grow long they get considerably wider and taller as well. They usually grow about a foot in 6-8 months and then an inch a month until about 20-24” long. Then they slow down. If he’s 14” and your tanks 18” he’s already as big a fish as your tank can support. I know they’re gorgeous fish and I wanted them for so long before I had my big tanks but the reality is if you can’t give him a monster tank in the next 3-4 months then you should find him a better home.

You could probably keep him in your 150 for a few months before you need to upgrade. If that fish is 14” now then it’s already done most of its growing and will slow down considerably. It should top out close to 20” The 150 will be a upgrade and if your buddy can’t find someone with a monster tank then it most likely will be stuffed into a 40 breeder at a lfs. FWIW my fish are 13” to 16” and are 2 years old and are getting too big for my 220.

He said he's gonna try social media/Kijiji for a month to sell it. But I think just as a boost for the fish Ill house it in my 150 for the 30 days so it at least can "stretch its legs" vs the 75g it's in now.
