Need Help With My 12" Jack Dempsey

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks! I really appreciate knowing we're doing a good job with them! They're pretty lively today and I haven't fed them at all so hopefully they'll keep doing well!

Yes, that is a texas. I can't tell from the pictures what sex it is. If it has a block/dark spot in the middle of it's dorsal fin it is a female, if it does not it is a male. Kind of looks like male to me but would need a better picture with it's dorsal fin extended to say for sure.

I don't think you'll see a female texas get that large...big bastard of a male!

Holy crap! What are you feeding that Texas? Are you and your husband both over 6'6" tall? If so, there is something unnatural in your food/water supply down there! lol

Those are amazing fish!

I have some tank busters too, and the older they get the more "aware" they are I think. You know, this might sound weird, but as they get older I think they get bored. You might try putting a ping pong ball on top of the water and just leaving it in here. I'll walk in and see my fish playing around with the ping pong ball.

I also have a pair of jags who get bored. They don't mess with the ping pong ball but sometimes they decide to move all 200 LBS of gravel to one side of the tank. When their done, they move the gravel to the other side of the tank.

Judging by the color and size of your fish, you don't need to worry about the diet your feeding them, or really anything else. Just keep doing what your doing. And remember large, older fish like that really just need more "entertainment" than others...

LOL!!! Thanks!!! Well.....my husband is 6'3! :) Not I though....They are quite spoiled with the food. :) I try to give them a lot and keep it varied. :) Mainly frozen foods and dried krill! Occasional live feeders!

I love the idea of the ping pong ball! I'm going to try it. My husband just said yesterday that he thinks the Texas is bored......The Texas does move around the gravel and redecorates A LOT! Was doing it all day yesterday! Our Texas, who we call Jackie has so much of a personality and is TOTALLY "aware". People think I'm wacked but I talk to Jackie all the time and Jackie knows and listens to me. Like when I tell him to stop doing something or to turn a certain way so I can look at him. And he LOVES to have his picture taken! LOL! Very funny!

Really appreciate the kuddos! I've learned everything by trial and error - lots of reading on this website as well as other articles, etc. I'm going to try and make the tank for entertaining for them! Thanks!
