Just in some ways, a matter of semantics, but the genus Aequidens has been restricted to the patricki/metae/pallidus group, of about 15 species.
The species pulcher, along with the some former Aequidens cichlids from west and north of the Andes (like rivuatus, coerleopunctatus, and a few others) are now considered to be in the genus Andinoacara. Other former Aequidens are now Tahuantinsuyoa, and Mazarunia among other genera.
But more to the point of your post, and take it with a grain of salt, I have a group of A coerleopunctatus in a 180 gal (these max out about the same size as pulcher) and my dominant male drove 3 other males into suicidal jumps from the tank. I seldom saw the aggression, but dried fish on the lawn in the morning made the result obvious.
He has been more charitable with the half dozen or more females in the tank that divides and spread his advances between the group.

The scars on the mouth are obvious from jaw locking.
