hi guys. so i'm new to planted tanks but tried to learn as much as i could from the internet and forums. i don't have any friends who are as into fish keeping, let alone planted aquariums, so i never got any first hand advice from anyone.

my vallisnerias that i've planted in july left some dead. i removed the dead ones as well as some that only rotted at the upper parts of its leaves. but what i did with the latter, i clipped the dead parts off and replanted em and they're doing great! they're so green and healthy and are spreading around already.

but recently i noticed some of them are starting to die again. i need some quick tips on how i might be able to improve my plants' growth. i use aqua soil as well as fine sand for substrate and have no CO2. i use flourish every other day, as instructed on the bottle. is there anything else that i may be able to do? excuse the brownish water in the tank. my driftwoods' still leeching tannin.

THANKS!

Thank you. but how many percent should my water changes be and how often? I'm not stocked with any fish at the moment.

I don't think you need to do water changes, I think your water is to Hard. When your water evaporates does it leave a residue of white stuff, almost crusty looking? I think your Vallisneria dont like the hard water. Now from the pictures it looks like they are fine and healthy but if your saying they are kinda dying off and i'm asuming your have all the right requirements like light, fertilizer, etc, then my best guess would be the hardness of the water. You can Google how to lower the hardness of aquarium water and you should see some guides on it, do a little research there are many ways to bring it down.

Like i said I'm not 100%, but its my best guess. Also i take it back water changes would be a good idea for the tannins, try 10-15% a week water changes, you can go up to 25% if the tannins are really bad, they could be blocking out light.

Good Luck

Valls really only need two things...>Decent lighting & Nitrates. Test the N, and if you're not getting enough you can dose Seachem Nitrogen.
