I just pulled the old one out with pliers. I lined the new one up with the shaft hole in the motor and pushed it in as far as I could. Don't get too carried away with the force though. The filters are so quiet now I can't hear them. Just make sure you have the shaft in straight and if you use a ceramic one be careful not to break it.
