Need help with plecos

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I mentioned salt to the fish guy and he said it was for preventative measures not when they have ick. I showed him the photos I posted here.

I hope he was being truthful and not selling product. The airthing seems to have bubbles on it i turned off the filter...most of the bubbles come from the filter.

What exactly did he say this thing would do? It looks like just a bubbler with lights, in which case it is basically useless. It will not add any more air to the aquarium, the splashing from the filter return is sufficient for gas exchange. He may have pulled a salesman on you. That said, it will not hurt anything either; it is mainly just decorative.

The Ich Attack may not be the best product, assuming the problem is the wormy looking things, (and it may not be) since it is only intended to treat single cell diseases. I guess go ahead and give it a shot, since it is herbal and should not hurt anything.

How are the fish themselves doing? Any change in condition?

Good luck,
Brian

The biggest one came out for a while just after I put the light in but I havent seen him/her since. The two smaller ones have been out quite a bit. The medium sized one being a nudge to the tiny one, lol. I havent seen the convict. It hides in the log. I think it misses goldie. They used to hang together. I havent tried the meds yet. I didnt want to mess with their nighttime feeding.

Do they have any visible signs of infection? Are the white wormy things still floating around? So there are 4 or 5 total plecos? Keep me updated.

Good luck,
Brian

I had 4 plecos. One died this weekend. I also have one remaining convict. Last night the big one came out later afternoon, swam around the tank and up and down before retreating to the log. Around 8pm the medium sized and baby sized hung out. The medium kept nudging the little one. Sort of like a big sibling messing with the young sibling.

The convict is always in the log. It is easy to catch and seems sad or blah.

I found one of those wormy things stuck on the side of the glass above the water line. Probably when I put my arm in to put in the light.

I THINK they may have eaten the cucumber. I pealed a 1/8" slice, cut it in half and put both halves on the fork. One of the halves is missing...but not sure if it floated off.

Yesterday, after I had my hand in the water, I developed a rash on my forearm...the soft inside of my arm from the wrist to the elbow.

My husband called insisting I was killing the fish because the water was too warm. He said the thermostat was 90 (last night it was barely lukewarm 4 hrs after installing the new heater. He turned it down to 80.

If anyone has advice? I wanted to use the salt, but my pink salt disappeared. I am using the ick remedie and measured it as directed.

I also read something about nitrate or nitrite level can cause ick? Is this accurate?

90* is too warm for the fish, about 80* is the max. You do have to keep an eye on heaters, the built in thermometers are not always accurate.

As for the nitrite/nitrate, I'm not really sure. If your tank is cycled, you shouldn't have nitrite at all. Nitrate can weaken fish, which would make them more susceptible to disease. If you want to keep nitrate down, (which I suggest you do) you can try doing daily water changes of about 2 or 3 gallons. If it is convenient, you could do this with a vacuum to remove detritus, which would help even more. If you really want to put a lot of effort into nitrate removal, you could remove most of the gravel, so you can vacuum up the detritus more effectively. However, before you go too heavy on nitrate removal, do a water test and see what the level is. If you don't have a kit, a lfs or big box pet store should be able to a test for free to cheap.

They may or may not be eating the cucumber, the only way to really tell is to see them eating it.

As for the rash, no clue. You may have sensitive skin, or there may be something in the water that is irritating it. Keep in mind, even if that is the case, it may not be bad for the fish. I honestly just can't tell.

Good luck,
Brian

Last night I took up the log again so I could clean the bottom of the tank. I took out quite a bit of rock, too. I have to say everyone has perked up. Maybe too much. We had a bit of rowdiness in the tank last night. The medium seemed to be picking on the little one. The convict refused to allow anyone in the log. Everyone swam around...as long as I did not put on the stronger light. I threw in an algae waffer and one of the bigger ones came out of nowhere and jumped on it. I threw in 2 more and did not see them this morning.

The cucumber I found last night floating around.

Hopefully all is on the mend.

Thank you everyone.

Sounds good. It makes sense that they don't like the strong light, plecos are primarily nocturnal. They also do have a tendency to disagree sometimes. Keep us updated with any big developments. So glad everything is looking better.
