im planning to buy a red devil(s) and i was wondering how do u tell the difference between a male and female Red devil ?

easiest way to tell from a tank full of fish at the store is to pick the biggest one out of the group and thats your male. Also, males tend to have longer fins and bigger nuchal humps. Females have nuchal humps too though so be careful. If you can, vent the fish. Its the only sure way, but what I typed above should help you sex the fish.

If your going to a pet shop that knows there stuff then they may have someone on staff who can sex the fish for you. I aggree with what camphilophus said.

I doubt you're going to be able to find anyone in an lfs anywhere that can sex a red devil just by physical characteristics. what camphilophus said would be the best way to try and get a male but even going by size and behavior is no guaruntee....it's a pretty good bet but not 100%.

Also if you are lucky enough to find some decent sized ones all together in a tank watch them for a bit. You may see a pair defending a small area, or a large one terrorizing the rest which most likely is a male. That being said my last female was quite aggresive, had a great nuchal hump and long fins.

iight thanks everyone well i used to raise 4 red devils but they were my first fish so it didnt turn out so good (RIP) but i hav another question whats size tank do u need for one or maybe 2 ?

I wouldnt try to keep 2 of them together unless they were a breeding pair or if there were many dither fish in a large tank to take some of there agression out on. A breeding pair I think an 80 gallon+ tank would work but anything 125 or bigger would be better.

do what we do we buy 6 3 and 3 biggest to smallest and hope for what you want then sell or trade back to the lfs they will deff do it mine do
