So over the years I've had so many fish. They were always skiddish for a week or so. My red isletas flips out whenever I move. Had him for a month now. Never really see him eat and he bashes everything when ur near the tank. Never had a fish act like this especially a amphilophus.

In the bedroom. My wife and I are always in and out of the room and I sit in front of the tank just so the fish get used to me up close but he just isn't having it. To answer the question before, in an adult male

It needs more activity. I have my Beani in my room, and believe or not, what I did to get her from freaking out every time, I left the TV on all day. That way the fish continue to see activity in front of them.

This may sound freakin odd and stupid, but it has worked several times. She still hides when she sees me, but she doesnt freak out anymore and she eats now when I feed her, instead of when I leave. She is definitely more friendly now than when I first got her.

Also check for shadows. Shadows terrify cichlids. It could be the way the tank is positioned relative to the aquarium and/or ambient room lighting. Usually if the tank is higher so that the fish can see you, this isn't a problem. Anything chest/waist level or lower can be a problem.

I have a community tank in my living room, adjacent to a large window, and even though the fish have been there for three years, they still freak out if I walk by with the afternoon sun shining in. The shadows send them crashing into the glass all the time.

Make sure they know your the bringer of food if they don't know this they want nothing to do with you I would get a small piece of frozen ground up blood worms and hold it in the water this is what I do now my gt loves me

Strange. isletas is supposed to be boisterous cichlid that isn't known to be shy. Does he have any tankmates. Provide him with hungry tankmates so he feel secure to come out.
