Myself I don't get the styrofoam. Here's why. The styrofoam under that amount of pressure is going to be compressed down evenly on all sides that the pressure is pushing down on. Now if it was a more lighter weight aquarium then the pressure of the styro itself maybe able to force the object giving it a more level and uniform precision. I just would just assume take the time and level the stand than to worry about spending the money on the styro anyways. Might as well save the cash for something a little more usefull! Just my opinion!

When I build a stand, I assume there wil be some variation in the material. Foam board accounts for the variation.

For example, put a marble or bead on the floor & step on it.. OUCH
Now put some properly sized foam board on top & step on it, see doesnt that feel better.

Cinder blocks are 7.5" wide and 15" tall/long. I don't think an 18" wide sump will fit. You said the tank was 36" wide, right? 7 1/2" will be taken up by the row of blocks in front and 7 1/2" will be taken up by the back row. 36" minus 15" is 11". (If I'm making any sense).

This is getting way too complicated for you. If you can't build a stand out of cinder blocks and trust it then don't do it! Build a stand out of wood!

bro 36-15 is 21:) i was actually going for 8" blocks, and thus 36"-16" gives me 20" of free space. more importantly, is this structure stable?

i know but the dad wants cinder blocks/bricks and he's paying for the tank(and refusing to pay for a stand) so i have to figure somthing out.

lol Oops, sorry. Your measurements (5' x 3' x 2' tall) come to 224 gallons.
I wouldn't risk putting it on cinder blocks at all, but I'm overly-cautious.

alright, i was having the same sentiments. i'll wait for a few more opinions before scrapping the idea. thanks!
