need help with tank it getting cloudy to quick

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I really don't like arguing with you Joe--I know you are well respected here but most of your nitrifying bacteria is on surfaces, not in the water column. When it comes to the survival of the fish, to get toxic parameters down to livable conditions, it is more important to get the bad water out, than to worry about cycling the tank. I do agree, that on a crashed tank, B-S does take about 48 hours to get the tank back to normal, cycled parameters.

I mean, discus breeders do 100% daily WC on their tanks. I do 90% weekly on my discus & 75% weeklys on all my other FW tanks.

I think we are close to being on the same page now:D.

I agree that the nitrifying bacteria is on surfaces, not in the water column.
I said "If it's a cycling problem, "huge water changes" will only prolong the problem as your removing the nutrients the bacteria need to grow.

I agree if the parameters are toxic you need to do W/C's to get them down but don't shock the fish either. Several 20% W/Cs over several hours is better (there are emergencires tho).

Right now now we don't know if this is an algae bloom or what. (suspicions don't count).
Now if we can get the param's from anhwheeler maybe we can get his tank straightened out :headbang2.

I do forget to mention that if a person hasn't been doing regular, large WC on their tank, not to start now. Begin with frequent smaller ones & work up to larger ones. I'd have to guess that the water in my tanks are pretty close to my tap water now, so large WC will not change their parameters in any way shocking to the inhabitants.

i should have added all the water from that tank was from a older setup tank because we switched to the 65 from a 55gallon. rocked were from the guy we got the 65 from and it was always cloudy from him if i have a picture from him house i will show you. but it aint cloudy and all fine. i dont do any testing or add chemicals to my tanks and there all fine

So are the rocks leaching into the water... have you used these particular rocks before. My favorite thing is soaking rocks in bleach then rinsing with water.

It would have been a perfect time to get a microscope and see exactly what it is. You could at least immediately differentiate between bacteria and algae, and if it were neither then something leaching.

Instead of bleach, use Oxyclean--totally non-toxic. Rinse once & you're done. You don't even have to wait to dry.

i never used them before they came with the tank and it was really cloudy at his house it was a free tank because of the cloudyness he couldnt get it clear soo i took it i will post pics now.

this was when we picked it up at the guys house

You still should use some kind of substrate. How are the parameters now?
