Deff go for an air bubbler or point your return upwards so it disturbs the surface, that should help if its an oxygen issue

They do that when there's not enough oxygen. Since they're discus, your water is pretty warm and without the sump, there is little to no aeration occurring unless you point the outputs towards the surface. First thing you need to do is point the outputs up so the surface is rippling then add an airstone or 2 so that they receive enough oxygen.
