Guys,
Just asking.
I just did some water topup and clean my HOB filter. And the next thing i know, my fishes are all at the surface grasping for air and many died as a result.
Lots of cardinal tetras, denison barbs, amano shrimps, guppies and congo tetras are gone.
Temperature is 30.4deg C
Ammonia is 0.25
PH 6.6

Need urgent help here

What do you mean by cleaning the filters. Did you completely rinse off the media? If so use the media of another aquarium. Do you do water changes or refill after the water level lowers.

All I was did was to wash the media and clean the entire HOB filter in aquarium water. Use the media to scrub off the black hair algae. I didn't do any water change. I just refilled the water which was 20L into the 120L tank.

If you have any other tanks take some media from it and add it to the 120l HOB. Sounds like you washed out beneficial bacteria and restarted a water cycle

look at how low the PH is. It's not even toxic ammonia at that PH level. The measurement of 0.25 ammonia is total ammonia which is both toxic and non-toxic ammonia.

Didn’t know it read total. My apologies on that. In that case all I would do is add an airstone to help get more oxygen throughout the tank

Sounds like there was something in the new water. Did you put water conditioner in the new water, mix and then put into the tank?

Yes. Did that. I used dechlorinator, and then Seachem Neutral Regulator.

Sorry, my bad. It was PH 5.8 and Ammonia 0.02ppm

Thanks
I have a HOB filter, and a canister on that tank. Do I need an airstone?
I tried using an airstone and it worked for now. None of the fishes are at the surface grasping for air.
I had never use airstone previously and it was totally fine till today when I cleaned the HOB filter ?

For now, the casualty is 5 congo tetras, 5 Denison barbs, 5 cardinal tetras, 2 guppies, and 1 Yamato shrimp.
Strangely, none of the otocinclus or Siamese algae eaters or mollies are affected. ?
