Hi guys. Over a year ago I got my fist snakehead the channa gachua. Its been fine for a year but a couple of days ago i noticed it stays at the surface a lot and breathes atmospheric air more often than usually. Also a few times a day it will violently launch itself around the tank, ramming itself into rocks, plants and glass and sometimes jumping out of the surface. It never happened for as long as ive owend it. Please help

My tapwater is at 40ppm nitrate and every fish in my house is fine eith it even my african cichlids so i doubt thats the case.

Possibly the water parameters are off. 11-20% water changes aren't enough.

I’d agree that getting that nitrate down will help long term.
Has the water gotten any hotter? Any less surface agitation than before?

I've increased the water temperature by 2 degrees since its that time of the year. Its hotter outside. And there is no water agitation and never was. I've set up the filter outlet so there isn't any

My thoughts are it’s launching itself to try to get some air or it sees something that it thinks is food and is trying to get it.

He is refusing to eat. He hasn't eaten for 5 days now. Usually he is fed 1 on 1 off.

Try posting some pics.
Is there anything visibly wrong?

Here are some of my thoughts:
1) lack of O2, explains why he is at the surface and breathes atmospheric O2. Usually water at the surface has the most O2 so he may be staying there for extra O2
2) how big is the snakehead and how big are the African cichlids? the snakehead may be trying to eat the African cichlids
