I've recently set up a tank but have no fish. I don't know species very well which is one reason I joined this site- to expand my horizons! Anyways, I have a 45 gallon that is set up and i'm looking for ideas on what to put in there. I'm just in the brainstorm phase of my tank I guess you could say. Once I get this one set up I have a 55 to do but i'm only going to tackle one at a time. Your thoughts and ideas would be very apprieciated! Thanks!:nilly:
 
Things to think on so folks can help:
big fish, little fish
community or single fish
type of fish, eg, South or Central America, Africa, etc
cichlids, small schooling fish, oddballs
consider fishes' needs--substrate, water ph, kind of cover (plants, rocks, driftwood)
aggressive fish or peaceful . . .

it's only a 45 gal tank.. so most big fish would be out unless he has plans to upgrade in less than a year.

i'm kinda partial to south american cichlids, but the only ones i can think of that would do ok in a 45 gal tank for a good long while would be angelfish. They don't grow incredibly fast and if you only have 4 or 6 they should be happy in the tank for a good long time. and you could add a few dither fish so the angels don't pick on each other.
 
You won't be able to go with anything to big in a 45g. Go buy 4-5 convict cichlids let them pair up and the breed. It will be interesting and fun, the convicts are hardy fish and pretty easy to care for.
 
You could breed a pair of jack dempseys.
 
what are the demensions of your 45 gallon tank? this would have some bearing on what size fish your can keep in it.
 
it might be best for you to take a look at what your local pet shop has. even if we all agree on what is best for you, it won't really matter unless you can easily obtain it.
but remember: DON'T BUY ANYTHING until you see the fish, learn what it is called, and then go googling for info like a grad student. only then should you return to the shop and tell them "i want that"
