hi all, just acquired this piece today. bought it as a short body bichir. but honestly, idk what bichir is it as the patterns are very faded and i am no expert to differentiate between the similar species. my personal guess is that its a retropinnis, hence a short body retropinnis.

sorry for the blur quality but heres the pic. only managed to get 2 of them. it is measured 7.5", and the 2nd pic is a comparison with my SB albino senegal.

Can i ask of all friends here to give their inputs for this specimen? i.e. does it seem like a retropinnis to you? or is it even a SB? and how would you grade this specimen upon 10 (e.g. 7/10 etc etc).

all opinions are valuable to me. thanks!

I'm going to guess its a Polypterus bichir lapradei? I'm not an expert on bichirs though so...don't take my word for it

i dont think its a lapradei as they have horizontal patterns usually. then about it being short bodied, do u agree or disagree?

thanks for feedback! keep it coming ! :)

maybe a mutt? ornate mixed with something? can't say as i've ever seen a short bodied ornate, or an ornate that is that faded out though. i'm still learning the differences myself, i could be way wrong.

no idea. im just as lost as a homeless puppy on this :P

hoping for more views and ofc an answer to what is this bichir (and if it is short bodied) :)

would it be counted as short bodied ?

hmm... pretty tricky. It looks like a lapradei to me too.

can someone answer me if its a short body lol.!
