well it seems that my green spotted puffer has dissapeared from my tank. ive heard they burrow but mine never did. it sucks cos it wasnt anything to do with me. it looks like one of my anemones got it. as i have a rather fat nem and have found no remains of my poor ollie. :irked:

its been a few days since i have seen him, and have had the rockwork out to no avail... so i think its time to call it a day. i want my ollie back!

so now i need ideas from all you lovely people on MFK. i want a new fish to fill the void he's left. dont want another puffer, as theres just no substitute for oliver. but i still want something with loads of character and personality. i want something that is really striking/interesting, as the tank is the centerpiece of the room. it also needs to stay small, as my tank is a 30gal.

it will have a 5 gal (biggest i could do) refugium next week, with LR rubble, mangroves and a DSB. the tank has 10+Kg of LR a pair of powerheads and a fluval 4+ for water movement/filtration.

i also want it to be 'coral safe', doesnt have to be 'reef safe' though, as i dont have any inverts im really attatched to, as they where only in there for the puffer to chew on, but i like my corals. i was thinking a dwarf fuzzy lion. ive heard they develop loads of character when they get used to thier owner. and will take frozen foods. which is another thing i need to consider as i dont have access to much in the way of live foods near me.

any ideas?

If your aquarium is very well established then you can get a mandarin goby...they look awesome. IMO any goby or blennie would do good in your tank...they have very interesting personalities and are amazing to look at. Another fish you should look into is the purple firefish..my favourite salt water fish. They are eazy to take care but the only thing is that you should have odd numbers of them in the tank..even will fight. But for 30g, one should do fine.

mandarin goby would be a bad idea. tank is only a few months old as a SW tank (was brackish for a good while before though). so i doubt there would be enough pods for it to eat. and the odds of finding one that will take frozen/prepared foods im told are not that good.

the firefish is a good call though. i do like the purple, and regular varieties. will think about those...

anyone else wanna throw some ideas round?

These are what i would go for...if i had the money and time..

Octopus, Fuzzy Dwarf lionfish, Maroon Clownfish, Seahorses...

But i would pick the Lion..

yes I agree, as I said before, they need a very well established aquarium.

An octopus would be really good too...

A peacock mantis shrimp, which is really active and extremely intelligent.

Or maybe a Canthigaster (spelling in doubt) puffer....(sorry I know you said no puffers)

Maybe a small frogfish would work...

well first i'd wait a few more days for the puffer to show up, lol, i mean you did NOT find remains right?

after that.. there's a pretty good list of stuff you could do, maybe i missed it some where but how big is the tank?

id say wait too. how big was your puffer when it died. Any dead fish can cause an ammonia spike and this isnt a goot thing for any fish, especially a new one. hold tight for another few days and you should be fine, also suggest doing a water change if you hant dont one yet.

found it. dried up on the floor. cat was kicking it about... it must have jumped through one of the holes ive cut out of my lid for my overflow... not cool. especially as the holes are only as wide as the puffer. gotta give it to the little feller, he had a crack shot :)

i wanna know what the nem got then... maybe a few of my starfish?

anyway, so now i can deffo say the puffer is an ex-puffer.

weylin, some good ideas there... would get an octopus, but i have trouble with keeping fish in tanks! an octo would escape in seconds. i have a common clown already, but i can get rid of it, or give it its own tank if need be... and seahorses are way too expensive. and are probably a little above my fishkeeping abillity.

micstarz do you have some sort of mantis shrimp addiction or something?:) good idea but inverts (prawns/crabs) arent really my thing. plus ive never seen one for sale near me...

sweettang havent done a water change for a while actually. no money for salt. going to get some now.

thanks all. keep them ideas coming...
