Need ideas for large peaceful fish- that stay peaceful

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks DMD. That's a bad horror story, I lost a datnoid that way (feeder fish not properly quarantined) dats cost about 1k in Australia.....

How do you find having pearseis with other big cichlids?

Mine is peaceful with other fish the same size or bigger and smaller cichlids. He knows he is the boss but the smaller cichlids are getting bigger, he still seems peaceful towards them.

I have had no issues adding smaller sized cichlids for yaers now. But recently adding the regani was a bit of an issue. The regani is about 10" and is the largest cichlid Ive ever added. There was some chasing and biting for a few hours but one the pecking order was established it was peaceful again. I also have a small 5" red bay snook in there and no problem. I will soon be adding a few others that are small so Im sure it will be fine.

Cool, thanks for the suggestions! That barb looks cool, but they're expensive. 40 bucks per is way too much when I would need at least 20 of them. But they are neat looking. I checked Petsmart page and I'm not showing them available.. but if I found them at a reasonable price I would jump on that.

I literally went to Petsmart today and they had them for sale for $7.62 They didn't have any in stock (their shipments arrive on fridays), but they've had them for over a year for ~$10/each, at least here in Texas. They don't show them online, perhaps because they're not available in all stores.

I saw some of these in person last night when I went and picked up a couple Pearsei's... they are an outstanding specimen. They weren't for sale though... this was a Tropical world pets. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for these.

so can someone confirm that these are Pearsei's?

A bit hard to tell from the picture because it blends in so well, but looks to have the right body shape and color for that stage in their life. They really are pretty bland as juveniles.

Cool, thanks DMD. These were in pretty full tank and none of the store employees were really very certain which ones were the Pearsei's. It had me kinda worried.

But so far, so good. They hid most of the night last night like most new fish would but they did come out pretty quickly to explore. By this morning they were just schmoozing around with all the other fish. So for behavior, this was close to the top percent for becoming at ease in the tank. (compared to some loaches and a bunch of sharks that took close to a week to start coming out and around a month to be completely at ease in the tank)

It was also cool seeing the two of them find each other and stay together for a while... like old buddies.

Ah, sweet. Thanks for the pointer...cichlid connection shows them for sale, and yeah, they're actually pretty inexpensive. Only $4.00 for the smallest one for sale, which is what I would get.

I just figured if it was considered rare, it would be priced like discus or rares like EBJD... $50.00 on up. I'm cool on anything under 20 bucks.

Now I'm going to wait a couple days to do more homework... but its highly probable I might get a couple these.

Man, these are confusing fish to read about these "c.pearsei"... listings show them as aggressive but then the description might say how placid they are. Are they only aggressive toward other cichlids or fish their size? I'd love to hear more behavioral details like this from people who keep them.

I haven't read the rest of this post but... My pearsi pair is a prefect example here. When kept solo they are fine wont eat any fish ( have had small grow outs nothing neon sized though ) but when they are together two things happen quite often, the male will be a normal male cichlid attacking all the other fish in the tank and even my hand / banging on the glass, second is also common for cichlids, he will bash the female then after a few days all goes back to normal.

All in all they are great fish & the purple tint they get is amazing I would just be careful if you end up with a pair as they can be very aggressive during breeding, I had 6 in the one system and during breeding had to remove the other 4 as they were the main targets of the male. another issue is if there are other semi aggressive fish that pick on them they will not fight back which can cause issues.

On a sub note with plecos a person down here has a sunshine who wont eat anything but neon tetras lol.
