need ideas for stocking 55g tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Look in to sa/ca cichlids. Many are agresive like you want, like jack dempseys. I would say cichlids are the way to go for you and then a catfish or 2

2 female JDs

1 male JD

1 short bodied FH

1 gramode

1 cuban cichlid and a seganal bichir

These are all options... You can't have all of these fish in a 55. 1 colom is one full 55 gallon stock...

thank you for your responses...

after searching in the forum i think i will go with this option:
-1jack dempsey
-1firemouth
-1 convict
-1 labeo bicolor
-(maybe a green terror)
-an member of loricaridae family (L114)

whats your opinion..? i would love to include the green terror also in this setup, but maybe it's pushing up a lot

maybe next week i will buy the fishes

I would not do a green terror in that stock.

I would do 1 female jack dempsey,1 firemouth 1 female convict if it is not too aggressive. I would leave the shark out beacause that would be a little much to add beacause it is aready a heavy stock.

tbh you can't really keep any cichlid over 8" in a 55g. the tank is just too thin. If you want to experience cichlids you should start with at least a 75.

Why don't you do what I am planning to do? get a 55g overfilter it and get a baby Rhom (black piranha) they have to be kept alone because they won't tolerate any living tankmate. they also grow extremely slowly getting to only 6" in their first year and 1-2" per year after that. so it can live in a 55 for at least 2 years. I'd rather show people my badass piranha in an amazon themed 55 then, oh look here are some common cheaper than 5 dollar cichlids that everyone has seen at petsmart.

thats just my opinion though... you have a alot of options in a 55 don't just focus on cichlids, browse on all parts of the site and see what you can get interested iN!

if you are able to get piranha where you are at go with the rhom or get a couple rbp's. If you dont want piranha exodons seem pretty cool and are aggressive. Im gettin some in the next couple weeks since im not allowed piranha in florida.
