need ideas for super cheap hood

ok, my question is do you want a top for the tank? or do you want a canopy?

for a top: glass is relatively inexpensive as are the little handles that you stick on with silicone. and my personal favorite is the light fixture egg crate.. a 2' x 4' piece is around $10 at home depot and you can cut it to fit your tank exactly with a pair of side cutters.

for a canopy: there is nearly nothing that is a less expensive alternative to a good hunk o hard wood. even the stain or sealant isn't very expensive.. just a couple good coats is all it takes.

rocks - I am sorry if I offended you. I was just pointing out that wood is quite cheap and probably the best material for the job (thats why people use it) As far as my this may be the wrong hobby comment... Well this is not a cheap hobby as you may have noticed but i do appreciate trying to find cheaper alternatives in this hobby however wood is about the cheapest its gona get in many cases as far enclosure/hood fabrication in this hobby.

No Worries,
You just caught me off guard with a belly full of bourbon and coke ;)

I just want to keep the fish in the tank and the lights out of it :)

Look for salvager's in your area, they strip buildings & interiors before demolition or remodeling.

Styrofoam sheeting can be easily cut and glued for a lightweight hood if your supporting the lights on eggcrate or acrylic/glass.

egg crate is the way to go
and pallets are a great source of free wood and like 99.999% of the time they are already precut to 48".. $2 can of spraypaint.. a $2 tube of silicone makes them waterproof... (paint first then silicone)
