I need some ideas for bio media for a new FX5 that is on the way...

I am going to set it up for Bio only.... a sump was not an option..(wife)

My set-up is a 125 with 2 Emperor 400's, my tank is tiled. I did a fishless cycle and water is good except I cant get the Ammonia below 1.0 (my tap water is .5)
Nitrates are 5.0

My bio load is heavy due to 4- 4" Oscars / 2- 2" JD / 1 Blue Lobster
I do daily vaccum (so easy with the tile) and 15% WC daily

The thought is to use the 400's for mech and use the FX5 for Bio

This fish tank thing is new to me and I want to do it right.. the FX5 has 3 trays inside and i'm looking for ideas to stock it for BB

I hear that the outside filtersthat go around each tray are no good and clog easy. I have an endless supply of Scotts pot scrubbers...

heres a pic while it was cycling.... http://members.cox.net/no911forme/fish tank day 1 001.jpg

Any Ideas????

Personally i have all 3 trays filled with BioMax ceramic rings on both my FX5's i have.. It's kinda expensive to load at first but glad i spent the cash.. Also i've never had any problems with the foam around the trays clogging and not working.. But that's just my own experience..

This is how mine is set up with a heavy stocked tank works great! How often do you clean the outer pads?

Same here with the sponges, mine dont clog up,as for bio ive got some seachem square stuff in with the biomax etc, cant remember what its called but the surface area is supposed to be huuuuuuuuuuuuge.

I only clean maybe once every month to 2 months.. I used to clean every couple weeks but the filter was hardly dirty..

Yep same here.

the only clogging i've ever experienced was with the blue pads that are supposed to go in the middle of each tray, but the white pads that are wrapped around each tray, work fine. the blue pads decreased my fx5's output flow strength. i've stopped using the blue pads and the filter works fine. i use bio balls in the trays along with seachem bags.

hmmm. Mine never came with any blue pads.. Did you add those or did they come with the filter ??
