Java fern or java moss seems to work ok with loaches. My anubias on the other hand gets chewed especially when they get hungry. If you use driftwood make sure the holes or crevices on them are not small enough for them to get stuck in. I actually don't like driftwood that has them since loaches will just tend to hide in there the whole time. Also loaches love a lot of currents in their tank. If you're going to do a loach specific tank then you might as well do a river type system where there is one directional water flow. Like this for example http://www.loaches.com/articles/my-clown-loach-aquarium

I am sure that you have seen these pictures, but it shows my little setup. Tank includes driftwood, pipes, fake plant and powerheads.

I've also had very little luck over the yrs with plants & clown loaches.

I find that the loaches prefer lower light conditions, so now I strictly use malaysian bogwood, a few assorted rocks, and a natural sand substrate.
With some of the larger pieces of driftwood you can create some unusual designs that will offer the fish large areas for shelter, and current breaks for resting. It looks very natural, and it suits the needs of the fish very well.

a while ago the british magazine had an articale (spelling?) about a type of wood called sumatra wood, the wood sort of resembled roots and did not seem to have any small crevises (again spelling?).
